the brand girls: to blog or not to blog?

In a time when jobs are more competitive than ever, we’re all searching for an answer to the age-old question: What will help set me apart?

Whether you’re a soon-to-be college grad, or a mom of three looking for a new gig, we all want to stand out in a pile of resumes.

Let’s be real, you don’t want them to just read your resume. You want them to pick up the phone and call you for an interview.

Looking for a way to wow them? Career experts say including a blog on your application may help sway things in your favor.

One of the keys to moving your resume into the ‘yes’ pile is showing potential employers that you’re more than just a piece of paper.

According to Mashable, having a blog helps
represent your skills (bonus points if you’re a writer), but also showcases your unique personality.

“Your resume should appeal to the person hiring you and should aesthetically be in line with the industry you are looking to work in,” says Rachael Bozsik CEO and Founder of The Brand Girls.

Just like aligning your resume with your personal brand, blogging is another simple way to Make. Yourself. Memorable. Including a link to your blog or website helps interviewers see you as a well-rounded person who deserves an interview - not just another resume in Times New Roman 12 point font.

A blog can be a great addition to your portfolio, regardless of your field of expertise. It can also be an easy way to ignite your passion for food, travel or fashion - whatever is your thing.

Madison Wetherill was your typical, on-the-go college girl - taking a full course load, working two part time jobs, involved in countless campus activities.

After graduation, she noticed how much more free time she had and was quickly inspired by some of the blogs she started reading.

“Pretty soon I realized that the things that other people were sharing online (recipes, crafts, stories about marriage) were things I could share too,” she says.

She started her own successful cooking and lifestyle blog, A Joyfully Mad Kitchen. The blog’s collective social media pages have nearly 22,000 followers.

Whether you’re looking to get #instafamous or to get hired, here are a few blogging tips from Business Insider:
  • Keep your blog up.
  • Name it appropriately.
  • Stick with professional vs. highly personal content.
  • Choose content that showcases your talents, knowledge, skills and abilities.
